Our research is for us a fantastic artistic laboratory which allows us for replenishment, openness to other artists and reflection on the practice of theatre for young audiences outside the particular context of production. Our research is inspired by multiple sources and is the space where the pressing need of art is expressed.
Workshops often mix with research while we explore different themes and forms with groups of children. The artists who lead the workshops and the children who participate in them are in a creative process. Different arts are experimented in our workshops: theatre, painting, writing, drawing and puppets.
In the 80s, the elementary school’s gymnasium was the first place for the diffusion of theatre for young audiences. Now, children most of the time go to the theatre. In order to keep a privileged contact with children, Théâtre Bouches Décousues has developed four types of workshops for them.
An original experience of creation in a school: La Mère Merle
La Mère Merle was born among children. In 1999, La Mère Merle’s artistic team nested in a classroom of Saint-Arsène school, in Montreal, where the company was enjoying a residence. All along the year, groups of children followed the show’s creation process and all the students saw one of its performances at La Maison des Arts de Laval, where the show was first presented.
With the collaboration of its artistic team, Théâtre Bouches Décousues develops original initiatives to build bridges between theatre and school and between artists and children.
