A play for children 4 years old and up

La Bonne Femme

Children’s chagrin, old elephant, witch soup… Villains beware!

La Bonne Femme, (the Wandering Woman) wanders through towns and villages, spending the night wherever she happens to stop. Here she comes, with Lélé, her old, sick elephant. As part of a daily ritual, La Bonne Femme plumbs the depth of her personal world... Her stories are made up of witches and wolves, of clouds and snow, of growls and giggles, of blood and bones. And when night surrenders to the new day, La Bonne Femme starts on her way again... Fantasy and daily details are all jumbled together in this woman of many voices who unwraps her life by the light of the moon.

Solitude and homelessness are the essence of this play poetically written by Jasmine Dubé. First performed at La Maison Théâtre, this production created a precedent while winning, in 1996, three awards at the Académie québécoise du théâtre gala. For the first time, a production for young audiences was honored with the Best new play and Best directing awards, honors previously only awarded to productions for adults. Best Production for Young Audiences of the Year in 1995–96, this play was also nominated in the Best actress, Original Sets and Costumes categories. In 1998, Théâtre Bouches Décousues performed La Bonne Femme at Théâtre La montagne magique in Brussels, its very first performance on the European continent.
