A play for children 7 years old and up
Mika, l'enfant pleureur
A story of friendship, solidarity and hope.
A huge volcano threatens the country where men live. Putting it out, it is said, would require all the tears in the world. Mika is a sad child, a dreamer who lives on an island of salt. With his tears and sorrow, he sets out in search of the giant volcano, hoping to save the world. On his journey, he will experience war, friendship and uncertainty, but will never lose faith in his mission.
Mika, l’enfant pleureur is a play about the meaning of life, the quest for a better world, farewells, new encounters, inner life and distant lands, where war rages and destiny strikes. This finely written piece offers beautifully poetic language, a strong, universal theme and an endearing cast of characters. In such trying times when war extends its evil reach to the four corners of the world, a small boy seeks to dampen the fury of a cruel world with his tears. With faith in his quest, Mika lifts mountains and gives hope to the people he encounters.
Mika, l’enfant pleureur is Pascal Chevarie’s first professional production since graduating from the National Theatre School in 2003. This 12th Théâtre Bouches Décousues production, the first not to be penned by our in-house writer, is at the core of our 20th season. Director Éric Jean has chosen to surround himself with actors who are also musicians. As is the custom during a company production, children were involved at various stages of the process.
Cast: Catherine-Amélie Côté, Maxime Desmons or David Laurin, Alexis Lefebvre or Mathieu Quesnel, Vincent-Guillaume Otis.
Mika, l’enfant pleureur is published by Dramaturges Éditeurs, 2005.
NOUBI : If we can’t stand on children, who can we stand on ? Besides, other people will hear us. They will come. And they will ask us: Why do you want to make the earth shake with your little wild children’s feet? And we will tell them: we play we’re shaking the world. We play we believe in our dreams and we extinguish volcanoes. And they will recognize themselves. And we won’t only be three anymore, but four, and six, and then a hundred, and soon a thousand ! And the earth will shake for real !
ZAZOU : And then all volcanoes will break into smithereens.
